Strange, but True for college football's Week 9

With Week 9 of college football in the books, it’s time to take a look back at the weird and wonderful. The funny and flabbergasting. The amazing but accurate. The strange, but true. ### Never in doubt ![](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/95/e6/7b/95e67b35ad67aa897fb2a362383eb56b.jpg) When 18-pt underdog Maryland entered the 4th quarter down 17 points to B1G foe Minnesota, odds weren't good that the Terps were going to emerge victorious. Since 2005, teams entering the 4th quarter down at least 17 pts had a 0.008 winning percentage. That's what mathematicians call "not good." However, for Maryland, it was even worse. They were 0-71 in their history. But as the old saying goes, the 72nd time is the charm. The Terps stormed back to pull off the stunner 45-44 in OT over the Golden Gophers. Strange, but true. ### UNC continues to improve on 69 https://memegenerator.net/img/instances/41007144/nice.jpg Last year, the Tar Heels had the 3rd best point differential in the country in the 4th quarter at +69 (Nice!), trailing only Ohio St and Florida. And this year, they've picked up right where they left off. After only 6 games, North Carolina already has a +41 4th quarter point differential. Now, some of that luster might be taken away by the fact they've lost 2 of those games. But they're still outscoring teams in the 4th quarter. So yeah.... ### Top ranked Clemson vs 1950 (2-7) Purdue. Who ya got? When Clemson entered halftime down 28-13 vs unranked Boston College, it was the largest halftime deficit a top ranked team had faced against an unranked team since 1950 when Purdue led top ranked Notre Dame. While the Boilermakers would go on to upset the Irish that year, the Eagles would get no satisfaction this weekend, as #1 Clemson held on 34-28. It also marked the 13th time at Clemson in which head coach Dabo Swinney's team was losing at halftime. In the previous 12, the Tigers were 1-11. So with that win, maybe fans will finally view Dabo as successful. ### Speaking of Purdue... https://theblacksheeponline.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Screen-Shot-2015-09-22-at-11.17.56-AM.png This one comes to us via the incomparable CFBFocus. With Purdue just outside the Top 25, they remain the team with the longest AP poll drought. They were last ranked September 30, 2007. Strange, but true. After beating an Illinois team missing many players to covid, the Boilermakers will be taking on highly ranked Wisconsin team, who may be in a similar situation as Illinois. Could PU pull the upset? And would it be enough to break into the rankings? If Purdue fans have their way, this strange, but true tidbit will only last one more week.

Purdue should be ranked. No reason to not have them in. Drew Brees and Kyle Orton agree.

Yeah, but isn’t it better that teams that haven’t played a snap yet are ranked instead? 🤨
